Soon after waking up yesterday, I listened to a short piece featuring a folk-style finger-style guitar. The sound and rhythms got in my head and latched on. Here's what I played in my morning piano routine that followed. There were occasional high notes from a second guitar and three part harmony vocals weaved in and out during the song; they all made their way into the piano stream at various times. This is the first 7 minutes of the total improv I did; the rest is part 2, when I veered off into other things. As always, eyes closed, no plan, just play.

This is what followed after the original theme of the morning reached its conclusion. I separated the two sections; this part is 15 minutes. The ending follows my routine of holding on until I can't hear it anymore, during which time I try to identify the lowest note and the highest note before I open my eyes. At that point, the mics showed off by picking up the ticking clock on the wall.

Morning Piano Again

Jane Miller

A Springtime improv to share from my Morning Piano practice. This one is close to 16 minutes and goes through all sorts of changes: focused, unfocused, clean, messy. A thought process might emerge and then get right in the way. "Hey, I think I'm on to something. Oh, never mind." Begin again.

I was excited to hear the birds back in my yard in early March this year. Here is a short recording of them, used without their permission.

Here, for fun, is an example of my morning piano routine. It's the first thing I do every morning, like morning pages. I've been doing this for a few years. It's pure improv, although I have fallen into some grooves like playing with the time (Gina Lollabrigida for 7s, Macintosh Apple/Michelangelo for 5s). I edited out the worst of the digital clipping disturbance, which may have been an electrical connection gone rogue. I kept some of those warts in near the beginning; they weren't too bad and they disappeared after a short time. This one is about 17 minutes long. I always end on a big chord and let it ring until I can't hear it anymore. I always try to identify the lowest and the highest notes of that chord. Oh, and I always keep my eyes closed the whole time.
